This is Springfield Avenue in Aldan, but where exactly? (Courtesy of Keith Lockhart)
Delaware County Historian Keith Lockhart has been digging through a bunch of postcards and photos from nearly a century ago, but is somehow stumped as to exact locations and directions. Keith needs your help.
Keith told the Daily Times, “This one’s going to be a tough one. This is Springfield Avenue in Aldan. The postcard only shows two houses hidden by trees. Try to find the intersecting streets, blocks, etc…”
Can you help me? Keith can be reached at keith106@rcn.com.
The answer to last week’s Collingdale riddle:
• Katherine Lewis: “I didn’t move to Collingdale until 1953, but I lived just a few blocks from Lincoln. My brother was a newspaper delivery man and he delivered down Lincoln Avenue. I think it was the 200 block of Lincoln Avenue, just off McDade Street.”
• James P. Butterly: “This Lincoln Avenue photograph, published in the Daily Times of Sunday, July 7, looks northwest at the intersection of Lincoln and Andrews Avenues.
“The homes on the left are 220-230 Lincoln Street. The first four twin homes on the left have rounded protruding second floors, the last twin home has a flat faced second floor. This is as it appears on Google Maps today.”
“The house on the right is 219-225 Lincoln Avenue. Notice the triangular second floor of the first house on the right. Behind it are two semicircular, two-story twin homes with very long sloped roofs at the corners. That’s 225 Lincoln Avenue.”
“I hope this helps. I love these old photos. Have a great day.”
• Dr. Michael Milone of Placitas, New Mexico, and formerly of Folcroft: “Apparently the 200 block of Lincoln Avenue. Your mystery is very interesting.”
• Scott Reichard: “Looking east on Lincoln Avenue.”
• McKnight Brothers: “The view is looking north from 200 Lincoln Avenue, from McDade Boulevard to Andrews Street. The first twin houses on the left side of the photograph are 220 and 222 Lincoln Avenue, and the first house in full view on the right is 219 Lincoln Avenue.”
