In 2015, Mike Trout became the first player in 38 years to hit a home run in the All-Star Game, and the American League defeated the National League, 6-3, to win home-field advantage in the World Series for the third consecutive year and for the 10th time in 13 years. Trout also became the first player to be named the game’s MVP two years in a row.

1912 – Kenneth MacArthur runs the Olympic record marathon (2:36:54.8).
1951 – Citation won the Hollywood Gold Cup in Inglewood, California by four lengths, becoming the first horse to win $1 million in a career. He retired after the race with total winnings of $1,085,760. In 45 races, Citation only lost money once.
1964 – Jacques Anquetil wins the Tour de France for the fifth time, his fourth consecutive victory in cycling.
1967 – Astros’ Eddie Matthews hits his 500th career home run off San Francisco’s Juan Marichal at Candlestick Park. Houston beats the Giants, 8-6.
1968 – Hank Aaron hits his 500th home run off Mike McCormick and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants, 4-2.
1973 – Tom Weiskopf wins the British Open by three strokes over Johnny Miller and Neil Coles. Weiskopf’s victory with a score of 12-under-par 276 ties the British Open record set by Arnold Palmer on the same Troon course in 1962.
1985 – Kathy Baker beats Judy Clark by three strokes to win the U.S. Women’s Open golf title.
1985 – The Baltimore Stars beat the Oakland Invaders 28-24 to win the United States Football League championship.
1986 – Jane Geddes defeats Sally Little in an 18-hole playoff to win the U.S. Women’s Open.
1991 – Meg Mallon shoots a 4-under 67 to win the 46th U.S. Women’s Open by two strokes over Pat Bradley. Mallon finished at 1-under 283.
1995 – Ramon Martinez pitches a no-hitter to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-0 victory over the Florida Marlins.
2001 – John Campbell wins the $1 million Meadowlands Pace for an unprecedented sixth time when Real Desire beats the favorite Bettor’s Delight in the straight. Real Desire covers the mile in 1 minute 49.3 seconds, tying the record set by Panderosa in the race to give Campbell his fifth victory. Campbell, 46, is a 19-time winner of the $1 million race.
2005 – At the inaugural Softball World Cup in Oklahoma City, the USA loses 2-1 to Canada in their first international softball match since 2002.
2009 – The American League maintains its dominance over the National League with a 4-3 victory in the All-Star Game. The American League goes 12-0, 1-0 and is the longest unbeaten streak in All-Star history since losing in Philadelphia in 1996.
2011 – Kaio beats Mongolian wrestler Kyokutenho to claim his 1,046th career win, breaking former yokozuna Chiyonofuji’s record for total sumo victories. The 39-year-old Kaio defeated Kyokutenho at the Nagoya tournament.
2011 – Amateur Tom Lewis shoots a record-breaking 5-under 65 in the opening round of the British Open. The 20-year-old Lewis tied Thomas Bjorn at Royal St. George’s for the lowest score ever by an amateur in golf’s oldest major tournament.
2013 – Jordan Spieth becomes the youngest PGA Tour winner in 82 years. At age 19, Spieth beat David Hearn and Zach Johnson on the fifth hole of a playoff to win the John Deere Classic, becoming the first teenager to win the tournament since Ralph Guldahl won the Santa Monica Open in 1931.
2018 – Angelique Kerber wins her first Wimbledon title, defeating seven-time champion Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3.
2019 – Novak Dukovic beat Roger Federer 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12 to win Wimbledon in the longest time in history, in four hours and 57 minutes.
2019 – British Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton wins his record sixth British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone, one win ahead of Jim Clark and Alain Prost (5).
