An investigation into an officer-involved shooting is ongoing in Tuscaloosa. According to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, officers were called to a Whataburger restaurant on McFarland Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. on July 13. Officers found a person they believed to be a trespasser at the location and when they attempted to arrest him, he was confronted with a knife and slashed the officer, TVCU said. A Tuscaloosa Police Department officer opened fire on the man, hitting him multiple times. He later died at the scene, according to a news release. TVCU identified the man as Joseph Driver. The injured officer was transported for medical treatment and is reportedly OK. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting in Tuscaloosa.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said officers were called around 1:30 a.m. July 13 to the Whataburger restaurant on McFarland Boulevard.
According to TVCU, officers discovered a man they believed to be trespassing at the location and when they attempted to arrest him, he pulled a knife on them and slashed the officer.
Tuscaloosa Police Department officers opened fire on the man, striking him multiple times, and he later died at the scene, according to a news release.
TVCU identified the man as Joseph Driver.
The injured officer was taken for treatment and is reportedly expected to be OK.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
