Congratulations to 16-year-old track and field star Quincy Wilson. This talented young athlete will make history as the youngest male Olympian in track and field since 1976 and is set to compete in the Paris Olympics.
Wilson, who was selected for the U.S. team’s 4x400m relay, expressed his excitement in an interview with ESPN.
“When I got the call, I was so happy,” Wilson told ESPN in a recent interview. “I just started running around the house. Everybody dreams of going to the Olympics as a kid, so it was just a moment for me.”
According to ESPN, Wilson was selected for the relay after posting sub-45-second times in three 400-meter events at the 2018 trials last week.
Wilson, a junior at the Bliss School in Potomac, Maryland, was humble in an interview after the meet, saying, “Athletics-wise, I’ve never been a happier day in my life. I’ve worked hard for this moment.”
Reflecting on his record-breaking performance, Wilson added, “For 42 years, no one could break that record, but I broke it twice in 2015.” [three] day to day.”
Congratulations also poured in from some of the biggest names in sports, including Olympic gold medallist Rai Benjamin, who praised Wilson, saying, “He deserved to win. This kid ran all three rounds in the 44-second range.”
Basketball legend Magic Johnson was also in attendance, inviting Quincy Wilson and his family to a Commanders game.
Wilson’s main goal in Paris is to not let down his “big brothers.” “Now that I’m on the U.S. team, they’re like my big brothers. I don’t want to let them down. And why, and [know what] “Your reason is … you’re always going to run faster,” he told ESPN.
