Though Portman has often been seen arm-in-arm with past partners, she has kept the more intimate details of her love life private. According to E!, she and actor Jake Gyllenhaal are believed to have started dating around 2002. They later broke up, but were spotted on a date in New York City in 2006 and got back together. It’s not clear how long it lasted, but it may have been casual, as she was also romantically involved with other people during that time.
Whatever happened, the two seem to maintain a good relationship: They starred together in the 2009 psychological drama Brothers, and Gyllenhaal presented her with the Desert Palm Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He joked onstage that she’s vegan and that it really annoys him when it comes to choosing where to eat.
And he called her “the Audrey Hepburn of our generation. She’s graceful, has great eyebrows, is talented, is very short, funny, intelligent, giving, incredibly kind and Jewish!”
