Chikkamagaluru police have launched a special operation to arrest people creating public nuisance, reckless driving and drunk driving in tourist spots. Besides arrests, police have impounded vehicles and initiated legal action against those involved.
Police launched the crackdown after receiving reports of tourists dancing in groups on the roads and drinking alcohol in public places. A team led by Sub-Inspector Renuka DV of Vanakkal police station in Mudigere district visited the tourist spot Devaramane on July 8 and registered 20 cases under the Karnataka Police Act, which provides punishment for street crimes and nuisances.
A further nine cases were filed against people smoking in public places.
Lingadahalli police arrested the four on charges of public nuisance, reckless driving and drunk driving. Police have seized their car.

Hundreds of tourists visit Chikkamagaluru on weekends and holidays. The surge in vehicles leads to traffic jams. Tourists become a public nuisance, which affects not only local residents but also other tourists.
Chikkamagaluru police chief Vikram Amate said they would crack down on nuisances and illegal activities in all tourist hotspots and police had noticed many people drinking alcohol in their vehicles.
The SP appealed to visitors to not consume alcohol in public places and park their vehicles only at designated places, keeping in view the convenience of other visitors and local residents. Visitors are requested to behave respectfully. They are also asked to follow the instructions of the forest department, he said. The SP advised tourists not to take selfies at risky places.
