Rising from the Waikiki shoreline, an unmistakable pink landmark has been known to locals and tourists for nearly a century. The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort sits on 14 acres of oceanfront land that was once the summer palace of the powerful Queen Ka’ahumanu. Nicknamed the “Pink Palace” for its whimsical opulence, the resort attracts guests from all over the world with its mesmerizing exterior alone.
Not only does the Royal Hawaiian boast a royal history dating back to the 18th century reign of King Kamehameha I, but it also served as a recreation center for the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet during World War II. However, it reopened to the public in 1947 and quickly established itself as one of the most exclusive hotels along Waikiki.
Built to resemble a grand Spanish mansion, the Royal Hawaiian instantly transports you to another time, lifestyle and spirit. You can approach the hotel’s indoor/outdoor lobby from the beach or through a lush coconut grove, but either way, it’s hard to miss the towering pink structure that seemingly rises out of its surroundings.
This sprawling hotel boasts a whopping 528 rooms across two towers. As its namesake, the Historic Wing oozes old-world luxury with textured wallpaper, dark wood finishes, and palm-leaf-inspired fans (don’t worry, there’s modern air conditioning, too), while the newer Mailani Tower offers more spacious rooms and great views of the beach and ocean below. Vintage koa seating and a variety of indigenous artworks uniquely evoke the historic setting, while more contemporary paintings bring the tower into the 21st century. All rooms feature large bathrooms with Marie bath products—we especially love the hibiscus-scented shampoo and conditioner.
With direct beach access (and free towel service), another water feature isn’t necessarily necessary. Still, families with young children will love the two on-site pools. Once you get to the beach, though, there’s a variety of activities you can book directly through the hotel. Highlights include the Mai Tai Catamaran (which comes with an open bar on select sailings) and surfing lessons from Waikiki Beach Services. You can’t go wrong with the hotel’s water activities, though.
However, if water sports aren’t your thing, the Royal Hawaiian also offers plenty of land-based activities, including morning yoga on the beach, hula dancing, ukulele lessons and traditional Hawaiian crafts like lei making, seashell bracelet making and lauhala weaving.
After a long day of adventure, you can relax in one of the hotel’s many bars and restaurants. Try Azure for a sumptuous dinner with a Spanish-inspired four-course menu, or grab a cold drink at RumFire, located next door at the Sheraton Waikiki, which shares many amenities with the Royal Hawaiian. And if your stay falls on a Monday or Thursday night, experience an Aha’aina Luau, paying tribute to the traditional festivities of Hawaii’s monarchy.
Leaving the Royal Hawaiian will be tough, but given the strength with which this iconic hotel has endured through the decades, it’s safe to say we’ll be looking forward to our next visit.
