PHOENIX (AZFamily) — “Eat pizza, save a puppy,” is the motto at Pizza To the Rescue in downtown Phoenix.
The restaurant, located near 24th Street and Indian School Road, opened in April and serves delicious Italian food to benefit charity.
“The idea of pizza and puppies came to mind and we thought what could go wrong. We love pizza and we love puppies so we felt like we could make it work and that’s how the concept started,” said Hunter Rogers, owner of Pizza to the Rescue.

Pizza To The Rescue opened in April and is partnered with Almost There Rescue, located just behind the restaurant.
Almost There has been in Phoenix for over 10 years and focuses on helping stray dogs who are pregnant or nursing, rescuing around 600-700 dogs each year.
Pizza To The Rescue supports Almost There by donating 25% of pizza sales to animal rescue.

Pizza To The Rescue’s food is all about the ingredients – all the pasta, pizza dough and mozzarella is made by hand daily – and because everything is made fresh, the restaurant doesn’t have freezers.
Popular pizzas include the Margherita pizza with tomato, mozzarella and basil, and the Funghi Formaggi pizza with seasoned mushrooms, mozzarella, fontina cheese, shallots and garlic.
Customers can also build their own pizza with a variety of toppings, including pepperoni, meatballs, anchovies, jalapeño, fennel, Calabrian chilli and pecorino cheese.

In addition to pizza, the restaurant also serves delicious pasta dishes such as rigatoni with spicy nduja sausage and a mouthwatering 40-layer lasagna that includes 40 layers of handmade noodles, short rib tomato sauce, truffle parmesan cream sauce and sauce made with braised short rib juices.

We also offer Caesar salad with homemade dressing.
“I worked a lot with the kitchen on the recipes, and we’re really proud of our menu,” Rogers said. “We didn’t want to buy anything pre-packaged, and we love ingredients. We love really great ingredients.”
For dessert, guests can enjoy Basque cheesecake with pistachios and lemon tart with lemon custard and homemade whipped cream. Guests can also order a secret Nutella dessert pizza, which is not on the menu.

Rogers said the restaurant will partner with Almost There to host several events featuring pizza and puppies in the fall.
“Anything we can do to help support the dogs is something we love and hold dear to our hearts,” Rogers said.
