It’s official: In a historic deal, Klay Thompson is moving to his new team.
The Dallas Mavericks announced Saturday night that they had acquired Thompson and a future second-round pick as part of the NBA’s first six-team sign-and-trade, which also included the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers.
The transaction included the following measures:
Dallas receives: Thompson and a second-round pick in 2025. Minnesota receives: 2031 second-round pick swap, 2025 second-round pick, cash. Golden State receives: Forward Kyle Anderson and guard Buddy Hield. Denver receives: CashCharlotte receives: Guard/forward Josh Green, guard Reggie Jackson, 2029 second-round pick, 2030 second-round pick. Philadelphia receives: 2031 second-round pick.
“We are excited to have Clay join Dallas,” Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison said in a statement. “As one of the league’s best shooters on both ends of the floor, we feel Clay is a great fit for our team. He adds a strong, experienced voice as a veteran that will be instrumental in building on the success we’ve had over the last few years. Klay’s championship experience, performance in game situations and poise under pressure epitomize what it takes to win at the highest level of the NBA. He will help us continue to grow toward our goal of winning our next championship.”
Thompson won four NBA championships during his time with the Warriors and was one of the best shooting duos in NBA history with Stephen Curry, averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 77 games while shooting 38.7% from the 3-point line in his final season with the team.
The Mavericks also announced that Thompson will wear No. 31. He previously wore No. 11, which is currently worn by Kyrie Irving.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported earlier this week that Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks. The Los Angeles Lakers offered an attractive option for Thompson, but the veteran guard was reportedly attracted by Dallas’ recent run to the NBA Finals and the savings that come with living in Texas.
