TEXARKANA, Ark. – According to No Kid Hungry, one in five children in America is currently at risk of hunger, especially during the summer when school is out.
To combat this, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering SUN Bucks this year to help combat child hunger.
This is the new summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program (EBT) that will provide every eligible child with $120 per child for grocery purchases, in addition to their SNAP and WIC benefits.
Arkansas and Louisiana are part of the program, but Texas is not.
Mia Medina, senior program manager for No Kid Hungry Texas, believes the program is essential.
“Because this bill was passed during a year when the legislature was not in session, Texas as a whole did not have an opportunity to consider budgetary opportunities to participate in this program,” Medina said, “so we at No Kid Hungry Texas are actively lobbying Texas lawmakers to implement and consider this program in the coming years.”
No Kid Hungry is a national campaign run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit organization that works to address hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world.
The organization helps schools and communities across the country feed millions of children by strengthening the state and federal school lunch programs that children rely on.
