The Seattle Mariners beat the rival Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Friday night at T-Mobile Park, behind a dominant performance from starting pitcher Luis Castillo.
Castillo struck out eight batters in 6.2 innings for his seventh win of the season. He allowed just one run on two hits and two walks. He is 7-9 with a 3.72 ERA this season.
He also made Mariners team history by striking out three consecutive batters in the top of the first inning.
Per Mariners television, Castillo recorded his 400th career strikeout with the Mariners. He did so in 63 games, the fewest in franchise history.

It would be a good thing to surpass Randy Johnson and Felix Hernandez in the team’s history. That’s certainly the case with Castillo, who joined the team via trade during the 2022 season. Though he’s been a bit inconsistent this season, Castillo has generally been a solid player during his time with the Mariners. He led the Mariners to their first win in the 2022 playoffs, the franchise’s first win since 2001. He also represented the Mariners in the All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park in 2023.
It was a big win for the Mariners that will set them up for success the rest of the weekend. Seattle is 3-4 in their last nine home games and will be looking to win their next two games.
Rookie Emerson Hancock will face fellow rookie Yariel Rodriguez on Saturday afternoon.
The first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM PST.
