Pet Memorial, a global memorial for pets and animal rescue charity, recently announced that it will deliver $13,000 worth of food to the Sky Foundation, an animal rescue organization based in Lasì, Romania.
The donation will provide 14 tonnes of dog food, canned cat food and hay for the Skye Foundation, which provides permanent care for around 400 animals, including dogs, cats, horses and donkeys. “Not only is the Skye Foundation a loving home for hundreds of rescued animals, they also spread their wings to the surrounding villages,” Pet Memorial founder Laura Simpson said in a statement from the organisation. 1
For 13 years, the Skye Foundation has provided shelter, food and veterinary care to homeless animals. It also offers adoption services for these animals. In addition to caring for animals living on the streets, the Foundation also provides food and veterinary care to animals living in the forest and surrounding villages.1 Last winter, the Skye Foundation and Pet Memorial teamed up to help dogs in need. “We worked together to provide food for severely malnourished dogs who were chained up,” Simpson said.1
“The situation has been extremely tough recently. We felt we could not take it any more and were close to giving up,” Sky Foundation founder Mariana Craciun said in a statement. 1 “The support we receive from volunteers and organizations like Pet Memorial is invaluable to us. Their financial support and love give us hope and determination to keep fighting for these animals.”

Pet Memorial was established to provide pet owners with a meaningful opportunity to remember their pets who have “crossed the Rainbow Bridge” and to use their love for their deceased pet to help animals in need around the world. The memorial helps pet owners cope with loss and allows them to create a tribute page to remember their pet through donations. Donations will be sent to Harmony Fund, the international animal rescue charity that started the Pet Memorial Project. Additionally, the Pet Memorial website also includes a Pet Loss Resource Center to help people grieving the loss of a pet find ways to cope. 1,2
“Pet Memorial shines a light straight down from the heavens towards animals in need,” Simpson said, “and that light keeps alive all the memories we have of our lost pets and transforms that energy into real, tangible rescue efforts across the planet.”
For 15 years, Harmony Fund has funded a global network of small animal rescue teams, providing more than $10 million in aid to animal protection organizations around the world. According to Harmony Fund, donations provide food, shelter, veterinary care and protection from cruelty to thousands of animals every month.1
“In the animal rescue world, there is an opportunity gap for the ‘underdogs,'” Simpson said in a statement. 1 “There are many volunteer teams who don’t have the resources or name recognition to access funding, and despite the amazing work they do, they are often overlooked. Harmony Fund and Pet Memorial were created to help these organizations continue their work.”
Homelessness of cats and dogs
A global report covering 20 countries revealed that one in three pets is homeless, with 203 million cats and 143 million dogs living on the streets.3 Additionally, 12 million dogs and 4 million cats live in shelters. Common themes across the 20 countries included pet abandonment (about 15% of pet owners are considering abandoning their pet in the next 12 months), losing and being unable to reunite with pets, a growing homeless pet population, and limited pet-friendly housing (nearly one in five people considering abandoning their cat or dog cite limited pet-friendly housing as the reason).3
“Dog and cat homelessness is an incredibly complex issue. This new data will help animal welfare organizations, policy makers, pet experts, academics and researchers better understand the scale of the problem and the factors that influence it, which can in turn aid in the most effective interventions,” Humane Society International President Jeffrey Flocken said in the Mars Report.
