ALEXANDRIA, Va. – ALIVE! is distributing 30,000 pounds of food at a distribution site Saturday, but the number of families in need is still too high. There are too many families waiting in line to receive groceries, and it takes too many resources to meet their needs.
Local food drives are essential to helping ALIVE! keep costs down and feed more people in need throughout the year, and July’s Food4ALX food drive will help increase stock and reduce food purchasing costs.
Volunteer Alexandria has made the food drive an annual event because the need is high, even though donation levels are at their lowest in the summer. It also serves as a catalyst for individuals, groups, businesses and communities who want to find ways to help. Civic engagement provides social connection, reduces loneliness and has positive effects on mental health.
This year our goal is to collect 30,000 pounds of food for 2,000 families in the area, and we need your help!
Please donate one or more of the following items:
Canned meat and fish, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled oil, bottled peanut butter, ready-to-eat meals for children

Did you know that?
Rates of depression and suicide attempts among youth have increased by 14.8% over the past decade, with one in three female students and one in five male students reporting feeling frequently depressed or attempting suicide in 2022 (City of Alexandria, Child and Youth Community Planning Report Card).
Volunteer Alexandria (VolALX) is Alexandria’s leading organization connecting people with service and engaging thousands of residents and local businesses in the community. We provide service-learning opportunities for middle and high school students, providing social connections with their peers and reducing loneliness and isolation.
Volunteering allows children to develop and strengthen empathy and compassion while learning about issues facing other Alexandrians. Our projects include getting outside, picking up litter, walking trails to remove invasive species, and other hands-on activities. Being with others and doing things for others can be good for our mental health.
