SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Hayden Springer fired an eagle and a birdie Thursday at the John Deere Classic to finish at 12-under 59 and shoot sub-60 for the 14th time in PGA Tour history.
Springer shot 27 through the first nine holes at a rain-weathered TPC Deere Run hole, then five straight pars seemed to erase any hope of breaking 60. But he made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole, made an eagle from 55 yards out on the par-5 17th and pumped his fist when he sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
The PGA TOUR record is 58, set by Jim Furyk at the Travelers Championship in 2016. Furyk is one of 13 players to shoot 59.
Springer is the second player in three weeks to break 60. Cameron Young also shot 59 at this year’s Travelers Championship.
It was the eighth round of golf sub-60 worldwide this year, with the lowest score being 57, recorded by Chile’s Cristobal del Solar at a Korn Ferry Tour event in Colombia.
Springer has only tied the record at TPC Deere Run since Paul Goydos shot 59 in the first round of the 2010 John Deere Classic.
