Some people like to work things out behind closed doors, and there are some in the boxing world like popular hard-hitting fighter Ryan Garcia and his promoter, the Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya. Garcia is currently at odds with De La Hoya in a very public way. The situation may have started earlier this week when De La Hoya claimed he would prefer former boxing great Manny Pacquiao to be Garcia’s next opponent.
Garcia was upset and took to social media to say so, but things only got worse on Thursday, when De La Hoya suggested he was fed up, bringing up the fact that Garcia didn’t attend the post-fight press conference after being knocked out by Gervonta Davis in a high-stakes superfight in April.
“What this Ryan Garcia De La Hoya tweeted, “It’s been almost 2 months and you’re still crying about that post-press conference? You and your “advisor” Lupe are to blame for your loss. He was the only one who pressured you to accept that insane hydration clause and that’s why you lost. Be a man and admit it.”
Let’s just say that Garcia was in no mood to let the situation go. “OK friends,” he tweeted on Friday, “you get it all. I’m tired of you disrespecting my entire career and thinking yours doesn’t matter. You have no loyalty or common sense in your head. Stop treating people like that and thinking they’ll just accept it.”
But De La Hoya himself wasn’t done yet. “Plus,” he continued, “you keep saying things like ‘Team Tanks offered you extra support,’ and they set you up to lose with that rehydration clause and most importantly…Al Haymon didn’t show up for a week. In fact, he never showed up. How is this ‘support’???”
“You know I fight that guy,” Garcia tweeted, pointing out a photo of De La Hoya and Rolly Romero. “And you pretend to be buddies with him. You don’t care about your fighters. I’m so sick of your hypocritical acting! Just tell me what you really think for once. I’ll respect you more if you tell me the truth you’re in it for the money. No love lost.”
“That’s called promotion,” De La Hoya retorted. “Guess who instigated fight-week press conferences that make it seem like you’re at a funeral? My job is to promote, your job is to fight. No love lost.”
Of course, it’s boxing, so a reconciliation between the two is entirely possible.
