Food insecurity is a major global concern, and an intern from Iowa State University talks about the struggles in Dallas County.
Leah Wilson, Dallas County ISU Extension & Outreach Food Access Intern, said there are food opportunities in Perry, especially with food pantries, the Perry Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market and the Perry Public Fridge in the atrium of the Perry Library, where people can stop by and pick up food. Wilson went on to elaborate on the Perry Chamber of Commerce Double Up Food Bucks, which are available at the Farmers Market.
“When people spend money on produce, they get an equal amount in return, so it’s essentially money back and a great incentive for people to eat healthier.”
Wilson said it’s up to the younger generation to lead the way in helping to improve food accessibility.
“Food is the future. It takes a community to make sure everyone is taken care of and fed. A lot of the programs we have are run by older people who are inevitably getting older, so it’s time for people my age to take on that role.”
Wilson emphasizes the importance of young people playing a role in contributing to food pantries and donating their time to serve their communities.
