Throughout the history of University of Oregon football, the Ducks have played numerous opponents in various conferences and all around the country. However, there is one team that has eluded the Ducks’ schedule thus far: the Maryland Terrapins.
Oregon’s recent promotion to the Big Ten (and Maryland’s joining the conference nearly a decade ago) finally allows for a matchup between these two teams.
A little history is in the making! The Maryland Terrapins and Oregon Ducks will meet on the field for the first time. Thank goodness for some unconventional conference realignment that made this odd matchup possible.
So, yeah, there’s no series history here yet.
Generally speaking, it’s fun to watch an all-time college football matchup, but neither program has a whole lot in common (aside from the fact that both have wealthy backers of sportswear companies pumping a lot of money into each team’s athletic department).
And the two teams aren’t exactly the same caliber of programs these days, with the Oregon Ducks looking to compete for a national title and Maryland hoping only to crack the mid-major teams in the Big Ten.
But this is technically Oregon football history, and college football history. So do I think we should celebrate this? I don’t know. The state of college football nationally has been so weird lately, with East Coast teams traveling all the way to the Pacific Northwest for conference games. It’s weird.
But this is the world we live in. And can Maryland hustle a bit to make the first matchup between these two programs interesting?
