The Houston ISD Summer Meal Program began Monday and will run through July 19, providing free breakfast and lunch to all children 18 and under.
HOUSTON (KIAH) – Feeding America reported that more than 22 million children rely on school breakfast and lunch programs. The national food bank reports that Texans are at high risk of facing food insecurity, with families with young children and most Black and Latino residents at highest risk. On average, one in four Texas children faces hunger. With schools closed, what happens next?
School districts have been working to combat food insecurity in their neighborhoods. The Houston Independent School District launched a summer lunch program earlier this month, providing free breakfast and lunch to all students.
Katy ISD is offering free meals to students over the summer, a program that runs through Aug. 2. CW39 Houston’s Idolina Paralez has more information about the program.
Spring ISD is also expanding the program to children in surrounding communities: Children under the age of 18 can receive free breakfast and lunch at any Spring ISD school.
Now, Harris County District 4 wants to get in on the action. Partnering with the Houston Food Bank, Commissioner Leslie Briones will provide free summer meals to children in the Houston area. From now through August 9, kids can pick up free breakfast, lunch and snacks at their local community center. Below are the community centers that will be providing the free meals:
