The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 9-2 on Thursday night at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 37-43 on the season, while the Yankees continue to struggle, losing 10 of their last 13 games. New York remains 52-31 on the season.
For the Blue Jays, the win was a cathartic experience as rumors swirled about the team breaking up the group with the trade deadline looming. It was also a great performance from slugger George Springer, who went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI. Springer is batting just .205 this season, so this will arguably be his best game of the year.
This big night made history in more ways than one.
First, Sarah Langs of MLB.com said on social media:
George Springer is the first player since Hanley Ramirez on August 12, 2016 to hit two three-or-more home runs in the first two innings of a game.
