GREAT BEND, N.Y. (WWNY) – The Great Bend Fire Department now responds to 200 emergency calls each year, and they have a shiny new fire truck and plenty of space to house them.
However, the department started in 1924 on a small scale.
“This year, the Great Bend Fire Department celebrates its 100th anniversary. This Saturday, the 29th, the department will be holding a 100th anniversary celebration to show appreciation to the community for their support over the past century,” said Fire Chief Mark Pommerville.
“We started out with one fire engine and a few crew members, but now we have six or seven engines and 40 crew members,” Pommerville said.
When the fire department was first established, the building didn’t even exist – it wasn’t until 1972 that it became the fire brigade’s headquarters.
A lot has changed in a century, but a lot has remained the same, including the department’s fire teams, the Cobras and the department’s mission.
“It’s to protect life and property in our community,” Pomerville said.
To celebrate a century of service, the department will hold a show of gratitude with a parade, building dedication, concessions, music, games and more.
“This 100th anniversary milestone is significant given the recent staffing shortages and closures that have affected smaller community fire departments and reminds us how fortunate we are to have a fire department that remains viable and responds,” the chief said.
The party begins at noon with a parade, food, games, a building dedication and more.
