Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin said: “May God have mercy on our teacher Mahir Choas. My condolences go to his family, relatives, students, colleagues and our education family.”
Minister Tekin issued a message of condolence to Mahir Choas, a high school vice principal who lost his life in a traffic accident in the city of Kocaeli. In his message, Tekin included the following statement:
“We learned with sadness that our valued colleague, teacher Mahir Choath, lost his life in a brutal attack that he suffered in a road accident. Today, as an education family, when the ÖMK takes our most concrete step in the fight against violence, which will be on the parliamentary agenda, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague in this despicable attack, but at this time we fear violence in all its forms,” he said. “May God have mercy on us, and we condemn it once again. We mourn the death of our teacher Mahir Choath and offer our condolences to his family, relatives, students, colleagues and our education family.”
The manager of the tea shop who witnessed the suspect described what happened at the time.
Satu Hervaci, who runs a coffee shop at the entrance to the building where Kocaeli deputy manager Mahir Choas lives, said he saw the attackers.
“I work in a coffee shop. I came in the morning. At 7:30, a young boy in a white shirt was walking around here, waiting. I was going to ask him, ‘What are you doing, who are you waiting for?'” Helvachu said. Half an hour later, we heard gunshots. Two suspects were arrested within the scope of the investigation that began after a high school vice principal, Mahir Choas, was shot in the head by a suspect lying in wait in his car in front of his house in the Çaairova district of Kocaeli. The suspect who shot Choas and the person who was found to have helped him were arrested by a team from the Homicide Department of the Security Directorate in an investigation organized by a police team in the Dudul district of Istanbul. The two suspects were taken to the Kocaeli police station for processing. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
