Who is Can Kurachi?
Can Kirac was born on May 22, 1927 in Ankara and spent his childhood in Eskişehir. Kirac graduated from Galatasaray High School in 1946 and from the Faculty of Agriculture at Ankara University in 1950. He served as president of the Turkish National Union of Students from 1949 to 1950.
On August 29, 1950, he began working with Bernard Nahum at the Koç Ticaret AŞ Automotive branch in Ankara. In 1957, he was appointed assistant manager at Egemak Company in İzmir, where Vehbi Koç was a partner, and was appointed director of the company in 1958. One of the founding partners of Koç Holding in 1963, Mr. Kiraç returned to Istanbul in 1968 and began working in the holding’s automotive group.
Mr. Kirati joined the Koç Holding Executive Committee in 1973 and was appointed Managing Director of the Automotive Group in 1982. He became a member of the Holding’s Management Committee in 1984 and its Chairman in 1987.
He also served as a member of the University Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees, which were established by VKV at the time of the founding of Koç University. He retired at his own request at the end of 1991, bringing to an end a 41-year career with the Koç Group.
Kiraç, who has published books titled Memories of My Guardian Spirit Vehbi Koç (1995), Memories of the Events (2004) and Korayl Salamalar (2004), was elected an honorary member of the Turkish Journalists Association in 2006. In 2013, he was awarded the title of honorary doctor by Eskisehir Osmangazi University. Two books titled Can Kıraç The Antique Man and Can Kıraç The Man Without Gloves by Mehmet Gündem were published in 2017.
