Ali Haci Demirel (71), father of former national team goalkeeper and coach Volkan Demirel, fell ill with chest pains in Bodrum and died in hospital after being taken there.
Ali Haci Demirel, father of former national team goalkeeper and coach Volkan Demirel and resident of Akiyarlar district, fell ill at home at around 4pm, complaining of chest pains. Following a call, a medical team was dispatched to the area. He was given first aid at the scene and then transferred to a private hospital in the area. Despite all the interventions made there, Ali Haci Demirel lost his life. Volkan Demirel and his wife Zeynep Demirel, who visited the hospital, were deeply saddened to hear the sad news.
It was announced that Ali Haci Demirel’s body would be flown to Istanbul for burial.
Message of condolence from TFF and Fenerbahce
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) and Fenerbahce club have issued a message of condolence for the late father of head coach Volkan Demirel, Ali Naci Demirel.
“It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the death of our former national team goalkeeper, football ambassador for the 2032 European Football Championship and father of coach Volkan Demirel. May God bless the late Ali Naci Demirel,” the TFF said in a message. “We offer our condolences to his family and relatives in their time of grief.”
Fenerbahce club also shared a message to the legendary goalkeeper’s father, saying: “It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Ali Naci Demirel, the precious father of one of our legendary captains and former assistant coach Volkan Demirel, who managed to keep the goalkeeper safe,” the club said in a statement. “To the late Ali Naci Demirel, the long-time goalkeeper of Fenerbahce, who has passed away,” the club said in a statement. “May God have mercy on us, we offer our condolences to Volkan Demirel and his family, relatives and loved ones.”
Volkan Demirel shared on his social media that his father Ali Naci Demirel will be buried at Görele Cemetery tomorrow after the afternoon prayer at Akalkent Mosque.
