According to data from the Seismological Directorate of the Presidency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was recorded at 01:36 with its epicenter in the Soma district of Manisa. The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10.24 kilometers, was felt in the center and district of Manisa city, as well as in the surrounding provinces, especially in Izmir.
Will this affect Istanbul?
Prof. Dr. Şukr Ersoy said, “Our country is an earthquake-prone country. A magnitude of 4.8 is an earthquake that people worry about. Western Anatolia has not had earthquakes for a long time since the 70s. Considering that earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 and above cause damage in Turkey, a magnitude of 4.8 is considerable.” There have also been serious earthquakes around Manisa. This magnitude 4.8 earthquake is not felt in areas such as Bursa and Çanakkale. Blame it on the Marmara, “it will not be a subject,” he said.
A warning from Nasi Ghorul
Prof. Dr. Naci Gölül said in his post about the quake that “the earthquake occurred between the northern part of the Soma-Kircagak fault zone and Büyüxiklar-Sabastepe.” It is likely a continuation of a short northeast-southwest trending fault that is located in this area and extends towards the Big Island. “Stay away from the damaged buildings, my love…” he said.
This was felt in the surrounding areas as well.
The quake was also felt in Izmir, Aydın and Balikesir.
According to information on the website of the Presidency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was recorded in the Soma district of Manisa at 01:36. The quake was also felt in Izmir, Aydın and Balikesir provinces. The earthquake’s origin was determined to be at a depth of 10.24 km. Eight aftershocks occurred, the largest of which was magnitude 3.1 and the smallest was magnitude 1.1.
Meanwhile, the earthquake was also captured on a security camera at a house in Soma City, where the camera can be seen shaking violently.
“There are no negative situations”
Manisa provincial governor Enver Unlu issued a statement on the quake, saying, “According to initial information, there are no negative conditions in the city and investigations are continuing.”
