In an era when contact is sacrificed for power, San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez is a true throwback: a hitting phenom who has little power (two home runs) and few strikeouts (13 in 330 at-bats) but who just hits the ball and does it well.
In his combined time with the Miami Marlins and Padres, Arraez is batting .315 with a .350 on-base percentage this season. He has won consecutive batting titles and could be the one to entertain crowds for the third straight year.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightingale, Arraez is also one of the rarest players in baseball history.
Did you know that San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez has never batted below .300 in his entire major league career? He is one of only 11 players in baseball history to accomplish this feat.
The 27-year-old Venezuelan made his major league debut in 2019 with a career batting average of .324. He currently leads the major leagues with 104 hits and is a key member of the Padres’ lineup. While he cannot replace the strength lost with the trade of Juan Soto during the offseason, he will undoubtedly be a key player in the Padres’ lineup as they aim to return to the playoffs this year.
San Diego is currently on a roll, sitting at 41-41 going into Monday’s game. On Monday night, San Diego will host the Washington Nationals at Petco Park with first pitch set for 9:40pm ET.
Washington is 38-39 and looking to improve to a .500 winning percentage.
