If you haven’t tried El Halal Amigos yet, it’s definitely worth a try. El Halal Amigos is a Halal Mexican restaurant located in the heart of downtown Willow Glen in San Jose, California.
Owner and CEO Hisham Abdelfattah founded the El Halal Amigos food truck in 2020, which became a successful restaurant.
Before you even enter the restaurant, music is playing and the mouthwatering aroma of halal Mexican food wafts through the air. The restaurant features murals on the walls and two TVs, one playing movies and the other showing sports highlights on ESPN.
When I walked to the front of the restaurant to order, there weren’t many people inside, but a line was starting to form. The menu was easy to read and had a wide variety of delicious looking dishes.

I ended up going for the lunch special, which comes with two al pastor tacos, rice, pinto beans, and your choice of horchata. The meal was $20.47, the lunch special was $12 (Tuesday through Friday, 11:30AM-3:30PM), and the horchata was $6 (plus tax).
The waiter was polite and efficient and as soon as we were seated we were given complimentary chips and red sauce – it’s nice to get chips before the meal but the content was average at best.
The food was served within 5 minutes and was well presented.
The tacos are stuffed with meat, onion, pineapple, and garnished with cilantro and served with beans and rice, roasted onions, beets, lime, and roasted serrano peppers.
The portions were plentiful and the color was vibrant, so I wanted to eat it right away.
The horchata was excellent – the perfect blend of cinnamon, sweetness and creaminess, not watery at all. My only complaint was the size of the cup – there was only one medium size.
The al pastor tacos were delicious – the flavor hits you as soon as you take a bite, with the onion, pineapple and cilantro flavors coming together perfectly.
The rice was equally delicious – full of flavour and not sticky or grainy at all.
The pinto beans on the other hand were flavorless and bland.
The tables, floors and restrooms were spotlessly clean, and there were customers dining inside when I arrived, which may have been because they went right after opening.
My biggest complaint is not about the restaurant, but about parking – there is one small parking lot right next to the restaurant, but it was full.
In the end, we had to park on the side of the road two blocks away and walk another 15 minutes to get to the restaurant, which may be a hassle for some.
Overall, the portions are generous and the food is tasty.
