The new Star Wars Oreos involve flipping a $5 coin to decide what type of food coloring will be used in the sugar crystal-filled Double Stuff Oreo.
Each box contains either a “Light Side” cookie with blue creme filling, or a “Dark Side” cookie with red creme filling – it’s a complete mystery which color you’ll get when you buy the package – instead, you’ll have to “open it to find out your fate.”
Both the light and dark sides taste exactly the same, the only difference is the color.
Is that a stupid marketing strategy? Yes. Did you buy the 4-pack to get both colors? Again, yes.
Apparently I am destined for the light side since the first three boxes I bought were blue.
Star Wars Oreo | Review
The cookie itself is pretty simple: a double-stuffed Oreo filled with “kyber” sugar crystals (a surprisingly obscure Star Wars reference).
Simply translated, “kyber” refers to the kyber crystal that powers lightsabers, typically producing blue or green lightsaber blades for Jedi and red blades for Sith.
The extra sugar? The chance of getting a cookie with blue food coloring? An unsung Star Wars reference? This is the kind of thing I dreamed about as a Star Wars-obsessed youth.
Now I’m a disgruntled adult Star Wars fan who’s pretty behind on the new shows but still has strong opinions about “Shadows of the Empire,” who is disgusted by how much sugar there is in these treats, and who realizes the mystery colors are a ploy to sell more Oreos.
And yet there was a part of me that was excited to open that first box and get a blue cookie, knowing that there was still goodness left in me.
What does it taste like?
Despite the fancy marketing and packaging, the Star Wars Oreos taste pretty bland: a Double Stuff cookie with crunchy sugar crystals added. Again, the only difference between the “Light Side” and “Dark Side” cookies is the color.
The sugar crystals serve two purposes: they add sweetness and a crispy texture to the cream.
The sweetness level is reminiscent of a Mega Stuff Oreo, but with less cream between the cookies — it’s delicious — but it doesn’t quite have the same more balanced flavor of the classic cookie.
Texture-wise, it’s enjoyable at first, but after a few bites it starts to feel like you’re eating grainy frosting.
So, are they any good?
This is a solid cookie, but no surprise there – the filling is the classic Oreo flavor.
However, the grainy cream filling is not as tasty as the original version, and as a result it fell to the “very good” level.
Conclusion: Oreo Rankings Update
I’m adding Oreo to my rankings, which I’ve been doing since 2014. It comes in at #33 overall.
