Houthi leader Abdulmerik al-Houthi said in a statement on Houthi-run Al-Messila television that attacks on ships were continuing to support Gaza during the Eid al-Adha period.
The Houthis noted that they targeted eight ships carrying 26 ballistic missiles in 10 “operations” last week, and said they have targeted 153 ships belonging to Israel, the United States and Britain since November 2023.
Regarding US and UK airstrikes in Yemen, the Houthis said those countries carried out 24 airstrikes across Yemen last week and claimed the US and UK attacks had no impact on the Houthis.
Red Sea Update
The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have since October 31, 2023, in response to Israeli attacks in Gaza, seized commercial ships off the coast of Yemen that they say are affiliated with Israeli companies, attacking some of them with guns, drones and missiles.
The Houthis’ actions have led many shipping companies to decide to halt voyages in the Red Sea.
The United States announced on December 18, 2023 that a multinational “maritime task force” called “Operation Welfare Guardian” had been formed against Houthi forces with the participation of a group of countries, citing the security of global maritime trade being at risk.
Following US and UK attacks on areas under their control in Yemen, the Houthis announced they would target all ships from those countries.
