The fire broke out at around 16:00 in a forest near Kumkoy in the Eceabat district of Canakkale. The fire spread over a wide area due to the wind. Upon notification, many teams were dispatched to the area. Firefighting efforts are continuing from the air and land.
Statement by Minister Yumakli
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli issued a statement on the Çanakkale fire. “Our intervention in the Çanakkale-Eceabat fire continues. We have mobilized nine aircraft, six helicopters, 67 land vehicles and 362 forest heroes to respond to the fire that started as a stump burn and has spread to the forest,” Yumakli said.
Admission to the Historic Centre is suspended
“Due to the ongoing forest fires around the Eceabat area, access to the Gallipoli Historic Site of the Gallipoli War is suspended until further notice,” Canakkale Governor Gül said in a statement.
The village of Anafartala has been evacuated.
The village of Anafartalar has been fully evacuated in case the fire spreads, but residents have been warned not to travel to the 57th Regiment and Combail on the historic Gallipoli Peninsula, site of the Gallipoli War.
Ship traffic has been suspended in one direction
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure issued a written statement about the forest fire in the Eceabat district of Canakkale, saying: “Due to a forest fire in the Akbas district, ship traffic in the Dardanelles has been temporarily suspended in one direction, north and south. Ship traffic will continue in one direction, north and south.”
