UEFA reported that the attendance figures for Euro 2024 could easily break the tournament’s previous records. Throughout the two phases of ticket sales, UEFA recorded the highest number of applications per ticket ever. The first phase was a general sale, while the second phase of tickets was sold to fans of participating countries. In other words, the second phase of ticket sales allowed fans to sit with like-minded supporters.
The public made 20 million ticket applications in the first phase, with even more in the second phase for specific countries. According to UEFA, there were 30 million applications for tickets in the second phase of ticket sales, meaning there were more than 50 million applications for tickets to Euro 2024 matches before the field of 24 teams was finalized. The matches that attracted the most applications were the most anticipated matches: the opening match in Munich, the final in Berlin and the two semi-finals in Munich and Dortmund attracted the most applications.
The support has been impressive in the first few days of the tournament. More than 65,000 fans came to Munich to watch Germany beat Scotland in the opening match of the tournament. More than 68,000 fans came to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin for the final match between Spain and Croatia. And the numbers of supporters are set to continue to grow.
UEFA sold 93,147 tickets through the first and second phases of the sales process. This was due to the rearrangement of the stadium to make more seats available, as well as ticket returns. UEFA adopted a new policy for ticket resales, which resulted in 10,000 fans cancelling their initial ticket purchases. Fans who were unsuccessful in the initial ticket purchase process were given first choice for the newly released tickets.
Euro 2024 attendance will be record-breaking
If all applications and purchases are realized, UEFA will break its record for selling out tickets for all matches. Naturally, with such success, Euro 2024 will be the most attended tournament of its kind. The main reason for this is the number of matches. 24 teams will participate and 51 matches will be held at the Euros. This will be the third time that so many teams will participate. At Euro 2020, COVID-19 restrictions across Europe made it difficult for the tournament to attract large numbers of spectators. Euro 2016 remains the tournament with the highest attendance for all matches, with 2,427,303 fans watching the matches.
As of now, UEFA has sold 2.3 million tickets for Euro 2024, and that number is likely to grow. As mentioned above, due to cancellations and stadium reconfigurations, there are still tickets available for sale. If UEFA sells those tickets and makes other changes, Euro 2024 could break the total attendance record for a European Championship.
For those in the US who can’t watch, FOX will be broadcasting the majority of UEFA Euro 2024 matches. Matches will be broadcast on FOX and Fox Sports 1, with some group stage matches being exclusive to streaming service Fubo.
