The Whopper isn’t a one-trick pony. The classic combination of ground beef, lettuce, onion, tomato, and sauce in a sesame seed bun that made the burger famous has seen countless variations over the course of 67 years. Some versions are still on the menu today, including the plant-based Impossible Whopper, introduced in 2019, and the accidental Whopper Jr. Apparently, Puerto Rican franchise owner Luis Arenas Pérez swapped out his regular bun mold for a smaller one when he opened in 1963, and the rest is history.
Other memorable creations are top-notch not just in size but in creativity: 2016’s Angryst Whopper upped the ante with jalapeño peppers, spicy Angry Sauce, and a bright red bun; the Green Bay Whopper was heavy with eight slices of cheese; the rainbow-hued Proud Whopper stole the show; and of course, the burrito-shaped Whopper, aptly named Whopperlito.
But the chain doesn’t stop there: it also serves flame-grilled burgers that don’t belong to the Whopper family, ranging from small bites like hamburgers and cheeseburgers to more specialities like the protein-packed Bacon King and BBQ Rodeo Burger with onion rings. Burger King currently has 16 different burgers on its menu, including the recently relaunched BK Melt, compared to just nine at rival McDonald’s.
