This year, the New England Patriots selected two quarterbacks in the NFL Draft, marking the third and fourth time in the past four drafts that the team has selected at least one player at the quarterback position.
With Drake Maye expected to become the starter at some point, we decided to look back at the history of Patriots drafted quarterbacks to see how they performed in their first season.
Of course, the game has changed a lot since the franchise was founded in 1960, but it’s always important to remember the history.
New England has drafted a total of 28 quarterbacks in the organization’s history, but so far only nine have started at least one game for the team. Here’s how they performed:
Butch Songin (1960 – 19th round, pick 247)
Songin played in 12 games in 1960 and led the team to a 4-8 record, completing 47.7 percent of his passes for 2,476 yards, 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Jim Plunkett (1971 – 1st round, 1st pick)
Plunkett played in 14 games in 1971 and led the team to a 6-8 record, completing 48.2 percent of his passes for 2,158 yards, 19 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
Steve Grogan (1975 – 5th round, 116th pick)
Grogan appeared in seven games in 1975 and led the team to a 1-6 record, completing 50.7% of his passes for 1,976 yards, 11 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.
Tony Eason (1983 – 1st round, 15th pick)
Eason appeared in four games in 1983 and led the team to a 2-2 record, completing 48.4 percent of his passes for 557 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions.
Tom Hodson (1990 – 3rd round, 59th pick)
Hodson appeared in six games in 1990 and led the team to an 0-6 record, completing 54.5% of his passes for 968 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.
Drew Bledsoe (1993 – 1st round, 1st pick)
Bledsoe appeared in 12 games in 1993 and led the team to a 5-7 record, completing 49.9% of his passes for 2,494 yards, 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Jacoby Brissett (2016 – 3rd round, 91st pick)
Brissett started two games in 2016 and led the team to a 1-1 record, completing 61.8% of his passes for 400 yards.
Mac Jones (2021 – 1st round, 15th pick)
Jones appeared in 17 games in 2021 and led the team to a 10-7 record, completing 67.6% of his passes for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and was selected to the Pro Bowl.
Bailey Zappe (2022 – 4th round, 137th pick)
Zappe started two games in 2022 and led the team to a 2-0 record, completing 70.7% of his passes for 781 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.
