CLARION, Pa. — The Advanced Practice Providers (APP) Community Engagement Committee is hosting a donation drive to support the Independence Health System Food Institute.
The donation drive will run from June 17 to June 21 and aims to collect needed food and supplies to support the Food Institute’s mission of building healthier communities by addressing food insecurity and providing educational resources to help individuals learn healthy eating habits.
The Food Institute is located in Butler and Clarion. The Independence Health System provider network refers participants to the Food Institute. After referral, participants meet with a nutrition liaison once a month for four months. Individual needs, such as dietary restrictions and kitchen equipment, are assessed during the first visit. Patients receive food sharing, recipes and nutrition education.
Education on the sustainability of healthy eating is a key focus of the program.
Topics include food safety, reading labels, reducing added sugars, choosing healthy fats, reducing sodium, menu planning, shopping on a budget, etc. Participants are also provided with ingredients and recipes for 10 healthy meals to serve a family of four each month.
The following shelf-stable foods are subject to recall:
Low-sugar cereal, plain old-fashioned oatmeal Peanut butter, raw nuts Canned vegetables*, canned tomato sauce*, pasta sauce*, canned soup* Canned fruit (with juice), unsweetened applesauce Chicken or beef broth*, canned tuna, canned salmon, or chicken (boiled in water) Canned kidney beans*, canned black beans*, canned chickpeas* Whole-grain pasta, brown rice, whole-grain crackers Light mayonnaise, cooking oil, soy sauce*, powdered milk or shelf-stable milk
*Please choose salt-free or reduced-salt products.
In addition, the following tableware and paper products are also being collected:
Can opener, meat thermometer, kitchen scissors, spatula, potholders, mixing bowls, strainer, cutting board, microwave-safe plates/bowls, silverware/utensils, dish soap, paper towels, hand and body soap, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, toothbrush/toothpaste, feminine hygiene products
Toilet paper, laundry detergent, baby wipes, hand sanitizer
Donation boxes will be available at Independence Health System facilities and offices in Butler and Clarion counties throughout this week, and area residents interested in participating can drop off donations at Butler Memorial Hospital or Clarion Hospital.
