Poland and the Netherlands faced off in Group D at EURO 2024. The match ended with the Netherlands leading by two goals. Here are the details…
The Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1 in the first match of Group D at the 2024 European Championship (EURO 2024).
The “Oranges” started the match under pressure and forced Poland to accept their superiority from the first moment. Despite the Dutch pressure, Poland scored from a set piece. After the defeat, the Dutch continued their dangerous attacking style and Gakpo, who appeared for the Netherlands, who had 70% of the ball possession, scored the equalizer in the first half.
In the second minute, Gakpo took a shot from the left diagonal of the penalty area, but the ball was deflected by goalkeeper Szczesny and went into a corner.
In the 9th minute, Lijnders received the ball on the right side of the penalty area from a pass from Schouten, but his shot from inside the penalty area just missed the target.
Poland took the lead in the 16th minute when Zielinski took a corner kick from the left wing and Buksa took it, moving to the front post and smashing a header into the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the 20th minute, Wielmann took a corner kick and Van Dijk fired a powerful ball into the penalty spot, but it just couldn’t get past goalkeeper Szczesny.
The Netherlands equalized in the 29th minute when Gakpo received the ball from Ake and, despite being blocked by three Polish players, fired a powerful shot from inside the penalty area that deflected off Salamon and into the goal, making it 1-1.
Buksa, who played on loan at Antalyaspor last season, scored a goal thanks to Gakpo’s individual skill and the first half ended in a 1-1 draw.
Poland managed to break the pressure from the Netherlands in the second half thanks to the substitutions made by coach Michal Probieś, but they were unable to take the lead. Unlike the first half, the second half was not as dangerous for the Portacals, but they managed to win the game with a goal from striker Weghorst, who took advantage of a good opportunity two minutes into the game. Ake, who attracted attention with his passes from left back, recorded two assists and was one of the stars of the day.
In the 58th minute, Zalewski crossed from the left wing, Kivior received it at the back post, and goalkeeper Verbruggen cleared it.
The Netherlands took the lead in the 83rd minute. Ake passed the ball through to Weghorst, who received the ball just outside the box. Weghorst scored with a comfortable shot to give the Netherlands a 2-1 lead.
After trailing 0-1, the Netherlands started the season with a winning 2-1 victory.
