WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Pope Francis made headlines at events with top world leaders as he visited the G7 summit in Italy and warned politicians gathered there about the dangers of artificial intelligence.
The visit was historic as Pope Francis was the first Pope to attend a G7 summit.
Speaking at the event, he called on political leaders to keep ethics in mind when developing and using AI.
“We must ensure and protect adequate human control over the choices made by artificial intelligence programs. The very dignity of the human person depends on it,” Pope Francis said.
He also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, delivering a message of gratitude from the leader of the war-torn country.
“Thank you so much. Thank you for your prayers for Ukraine and for the Ukrainian people and for peace,” Zelenskiy said.
The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia was a major focus of the summit.
On Thursday, G7 leaders announced an agreement to provide Ukraine with a $50 billion loan package, funded by frozen Russian assets.
President Biden also signed a 10-year security agreement between the United States and Ukraine.
“We know what Ukraine can do if given the materials to defend itself, and that’s exactly what they’re doing right now,” Biden said.
He then reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Ukraine’s allies in the war effort for as long as necessary.
“They’re going to get what they need and get it to them as quickly as possible,” Biden said.
