Since the founding of the United States in 1776, there have been 27 different versions of the American flag.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — June 14 is Flag Day, as it has been since 1777, when the Second Continental Congress adopted a flag with 13 stars representing the number of states and 13 alternating red and white stripes.
According to the Library of Congress, an act of Congress designating the day as Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949.
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was instituted much later. All 31 words of the Pledge we know today did not exist when it was first instituted in 1892. The words “of the United States of America” were not part of our Pledge until 1923.
Author Francis Bellamy wrote the pledge for all countries to use.
In the United States, the pledge was changed again in 1954. President Eisenhower, responding to the threat of Communism, urged Congress to add the words “under God.” These 31 words became the new pledge that remains in place to this day.
The Field of Honor at Kernersville’s Triad Park is a comprehensive look at the history of the American flag. There have been 27 different versions of the flag since the United States was founded in 1776. But this park goes back to the days when the Freedom Riders came together, and it’s history before history.
