The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reclassified more than a dozen foods to the highest risk level in May 2024.
The FDA regularly tests and reviews products to ensure they meet safety standards and sometimes finds that products sold in stores across the U.S. don’t meet health guidelines and may pose a safety risk to the public.
Class I recalls, the highest risk level, are issued when there is a “reasonable likelihood” that use of or exposure to the product could “cause serious health injury or death.”
Newsweek tracked 19 recalled products that were updated to a Class I risk level in May 2024 and affect nine states, most of which involve food that may contain undeclared allergens. Some were contaminated with pathogens that can make people sick, such as E. coli and Listeria.
The following foods were recalled in May of this year:

Geissler’s Supermarket – Shrimp Tempura and Spicy Shrimp – Egg, wheat and milk content undeclared. Recalled in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Geissler’s Supermarket – Spicy Salmon – Egg, wheat and milk content undeclared. Recalled in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Geissler’s Supermarket – Spicy Tuna – Egg, wheat and milk content undeclared. Recalled in Connecticut and Massachusetts. King Kullen Broccoli Cutlets with Breadcrumbs and Parmesan. Recalled in New York State only. Infinite Herbs Organic Basil may be contaminated with Salmonella. Recalled in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Sammy’s Milk Goat Milk Toddler Formula is not nutritious when used as an infant formula. Recalled nationwide for being available online only. Sammy’s Milk Goat Milk Toddler Formula Stick Packs are not nutritious when used as an infant formula. Recalled nationwide for being available online only. D-LO Delightful Gourmet Cheesecake Pistachio was not listed as an ingredient for wheat or soy. Recall location unknown.
