Own a piece of rock ‘n’ roll history: Historic Grateful Dead home hits market for $2.7 million
The Craftsman house where Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann came up with the band name “Grateful Dead” is on the market for $2.7 million.
Lesh rented a two-bedroom house in Palo Alto, California in the mid-1960s. The yard features mature trees, a vegetable patch, a brick deck, shaded seating and dining areas, and a fireplace. The garage was converted into a studio, and the Grateful Dead held many jam sessions there.
“This home and garage/studio has the unmistakable feel of having been there for decades,” Compass Realtor Helen Lippert told Realtor.com. “The home just turned 106 years old and is in great condition. The bones are sound and it’s been lovingly maintained. Most people consider the backyard a big surprise and a major plus.”
do not miss it:
Built in 1918, the 1,008-square-foot home retains many original interior features, including a fireplace, wood floors and built-in bookshelves. The kitchen has custom Shaker cabinetry, a dining nook and an adjacent laundry room.
Owners Sonia Saunders and Amrit Kang said the decision to sell their home was a difficult one.
“In many ways, we started here just like the Grateful Dead,” Sanders says. “We moved in with one child and are leaving with two children, an au pair and lots of great memories. Our oldest daughter learned to ride a bike in the backyard.”

The couple considered building a larger home on the property to accommodate their growing family, but did not want to demolish a home with so much history and charm.
The house is located near Stanford University, in a neighborhood known as Professorville, just a few blocks from the Hewlett-Packard garage, now a private museum, considered the birthplace of Silicon Valley.
Grateful Dead spinoff group Dead & Company, comprised of founding Dead members Weir and Hart, John Mayer, and longtime collaborators Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and Jay Lane, will play 24 shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas this summer.
