A man armed with a knife who was attacking a hot dog vendor in Midtown on Tuesday night was shot and killed by a bystander who intervened in the confrontation, according to police and sources.
The 39-year-old man was threatening a street vendor at the intersection of 33rd Street and Broadway around 8 p.m. when he pulled out a knife, rubbed it on the ground and pointed it at four men standing on the corner.
Police sources said one of the men then pulled a gun and shot the attacker in the leg.
One person was in custody, but it was not immediately clear if that person was the shooter, officials said.

The unidentified shooting victim had an outstanding arrest warrant, police said.
He was taken by paramedics to Bellevue Hospital, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
