The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ Food Price Index rose 0.9 percent to 120.4 points in May from its revised April reading. Increases in the cereals and dairy price indexes slightly outweighed declines in the sugar and vegetable oil price indexes. The meat index was unchanged.
This marked the index’s third consecutive month of increase but was down 3.4% from the same period in 2023 and 25% from its March 2022 peak.
The Cereal Price Index increased the most in May, up 7.3 points (6.3%) from April to average 118.7 points in May. The Sugar Price Index decreased the most, down 9.5 points (7.5%) to 117.1 points. The Meat Price Index averaged 116.6 points in May, down 0.2 points. The Dairy Price Index was 126 points, up 2.3 points (1.8%) from April.
