After the Seattle Mariners lost to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night despite an 8-0 lead, manager Scott Servais found himself at the top of the list of most undesirable managers in baseball history.
According to @OptaSTATS on social media:
Last night marked the fifth time under manager Scott Servais that the Mariners blew a lead of seven or more runs and lost a game.
This is the most losses by an MLB manager with a single team during the Wild Card era (since 1995).
The Mariners’ five losses are as follows:
April 9, 2017 at LAA (8-1 lead, 10-9 loss)
September 5, 2019 at Hou (7-0 lead, 11-9 loss)
Sept. 25, 2022, KC (led 11-2, lost 13-12)
April 11, 2023, ChC (led 7-0, lost 14-9)
June 7, 2024 – KC (8-0 lead, 10-9 loss)

It’s not a record anyone would want, but it’s a testament to Servais’ longevity — he’s in his ninth season as Mariners manager and has certainly had more opportunities to rack up games like this than most managers.
Servais has a solid 652-607 record with Seattle, winning five of the past eight seasons and leading the Mariners to a 36-29 record this season. Despite his solid success, the Mariners have only made the playoffs once during his tenure. They are in the running to make the playoffs again this season and are currently in first place in the American League West.
The Mariners will face the Royals again on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch set for 2:10 pm PST.
Alec Marsh will pitch for Kansas City and Luis Castillo will pitch for the Mariners.
