Corbin Burns made history for the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night with another impressive performance.
Barnes allowed just one run on four hits and one walk over seven innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto’s only run came on a solo home run by George Springer, while Baltimore piled on double-digit runs to win, 10-1.
By the time he was replaced, Barnes had lowered his ERA to 2.26 on the season. In 2024, he was 6-2 with a 1.017 WHIP and 1.7 WAR.
According to Underdog Fantasy’s Justin Havens, Barnes had the worst ERA through the first 13 games of this season by an Orioles pitcher since Jim Palmer in 1978. Through June 5 of that year, the future Hall of Famer had a 2.12 ERA.

For Barnes, who has only been in Baltimore for a few months, adding his name to the history books as a three-time Cy Young Award winner and three-time World Series champion is quite an accomplishment. The Orioles acquired Barnes in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in February, and he has been the team’s ace ever since.
While Barnes will never be a career Oriole player like Palmer, who pitched for the Baltimore Lions from 1965-1984, he could stay in Baltimore long-term if he re-signs with the team this winter.
Barnes has been a Cy Young Award candidate every year through the 2020s, winning the National League honor with the Brewers in 2021. He also finished sixth in voting in 2020, seventh in 2022 and eighth in 2023.
In his first season in the American League, Barnes is considered a top-three candidate to win the Cy Young Award.
Since the start of the 2020 season, Burns has posted a 43-24 record with a 2.79 ERA, a 0.999 WHIP, 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings and a 16.9 WAR. During that same span, Burns ranks fifth among qualified starting pitchers in ERA, third in WHIP and first in strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Orioles have been in good form with Barnes leading a rotation that has been plagued by several injuries in recent weeks. Baltimore was winless in Barnes’ four starts (April 26-May 13), when he still had a 2.59 ERA and .207 batting average against. Outside of that stretch, however, the team is 9-0 in games with Barnes on the mound.
The Orioles are on the brink of a big division series win north of the border after winning the first two games of a four-game series against the Blue Jays, with Game 3 scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
