Qatar ceasefire statement: “We expect Israel to take a clear position that represents the whole government”
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid Al-Ansari spoke at a press conference in the capital Doha about the ceasefire proposal in Gaza announced by the US. Al-Ansari said negotiators have yet to receive “concrete approval” from both sides for the ceasefire proposal. Referring to differences of opinion within the Israeli government over the ceasefire proposal, Ansari said, “There are discussions taking place within the Israeli government about accepting the proposal. We as the international community need to put pressure on both sides. This can only be achieved if we all work together,” he said, “and it will be possible if we make both sides understand that they need to reach an agreement.”
Al-Ansari said there was no choice but to sit down at the negotiating table and reach an agreement to end the war, adding: “Nobody can achieve a total victory in this war. The idea that we can eliminate Hamas or we can solve the Palestinian problem is irresolvable. “Total neglect will only lead to more violence and this cannot be achieved. “I think it is very clear to the international community that this is happening,” he said.
Al-Ansari said, “We expect Israel to take a clear position on behalf of the whole government regarding the US proposal for Gaza. The ceasefire agreement must put an immediate end to the long-term suffering of all the people of the Gaza Strip, the hostages and their families, towards a permanent ceasefire and an end to the crisis in Gaza.” “It should provide a roadmap,” he concluded.
