Braves franchise history
1952 – The Reds acquired veteran outfielder Willard Marshall from the Boston Braves.
1975 – The Braves selected second baseman Glenn Hubbard in the 20th round of the MLB Draft.
1986 – Barry Bonds hit his first career home run off Craig McMurtry in a 12-3 Pirates win over the Braves. Bonds had four hits in the game.
1990 – Ramon Martinez shuts out the Braves, 2-0, striking out 18 batters. Martinez ties Sandy Koufax’s team record and moves one shy of the National League record.
1990 – The Braves select Chipper Jones with the first overall pick in the 1990 MLB Draft.
1999 – The Braves lose to the Red Sox, 5-1, in a division-leader game. Pedro Martinez allows just three hits and strikes out 16.
MLB History
1915 – Ty Cobb successfully stole home in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 3–0 Detroit victory. Yankees pitcher Ray Caldwell was annoyed at a safe call and threw his mitt in the air, leading to his immediate ejection. It was the second time Cobb stole home with Caldwell on the mound.
1935 – Dizzy Dean is seen berating his teammates in the dugout between innings after what he feels is poor fielding behind him. Rip Collins and Joe Medwick argue, but Frank Frisch and Pepper Martin step in to try to stop the confrontation. Dean fights back by throwing balls at the Pittsburgh batters and is booed out of the game in the seventh inning.
1950 – Ernie Banks makes his professional debut for the Kansas City Monarchs, going 3-for-7 in a doubleheader against the Memphis Red Sox.
1964 – Sandy Koufax no-hits the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium as the Dodgers win, 3–0. Koufax becomes just the fourth player to throw three no-hitters in major league baseball.
1967 – Curt Flood’s streak of 227 consecutive games without an error ended when he dropped a fly ball against the Cubs at Busch Stadium. Flood had converted 568 consecutive chances prior to the drop.
1968 – Don Drysdale pitches his sixth consecutive shutout inning in a 5-0 win over the Pirates. Drysdale surpasses Doc White’s record of five consecutive shutouts and breaks Carl Hubbell’s National League record of 54 consecutive scoreless innings.
1984 – The New York Mets select 17-year-old Sean Abner with the first pick in the 1984 draft. Thirteen members of the U.S. Olympic team are selected in the first round, including Mark McGwire, who is selected 10th overall by Oakland.
2009 – Randy Johnson wins the Nationals game, earning his 300th career victory.
2016 – The Padres traded James Shields to the White Sox in exchange for 17-year-old infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and pitcher Erik Johnson.
