Plastic surgeons and medical boards have long warned against traveling abroad to undergo risky cosmetic surgery without doing the proper research, but some of these patients chose to take a chance. Others simply followed the recommendations of friends. Many of these patients quickly expressed regret, and in many cases, it’s easy to understand why.
1. Florida woman loses nipple and nearly dies after botched plastic surgery overseas
Lindsay Colosimo traveled from her home in Florida to Colombia for an abdominoplasty, breast reduction and butt lift surgery, but what she ended up with were life-threatening complications and life-changing scars. Colosimo said she realized her mistake shortly after the procedure, but she just wanted to feel good and ignored the warning signs, like a nurse using massage oil to push the infection out of her wound. Upon returning to the U.S., she immediately went to the hospital where she was diagnosed with an E. coli infection in her breast and told she needed more surgery to fix her abdomen.
“I wanted perfection, but now I look back and realize I was good enough,” Colosimo said.

2. Woman claims cheap lip fillers left her infected with ‘hard sausages’
The filler injections cost about $220 and also caused health problems that resulted in a week of hospitalization and headaches. (Kennedy News & Media)
Lauren Winstanley regrets going to a salon for a low-budget lip filler treatment recommended by a friend. The 18-year-old was hospitalized for a week after her lip swelled up like a “hard sausage” and began leaking “green and yellow pus.” She added that she had to have surgery to remove the infected filler, and was hesitant to have the scars fixed afterwards.
She’s not the first person to warn others about opting for fillers solely because of the low price, but hopefully she’ll be the last.

Here’s the journey of a 23-year-old Russian man nicknamed “Popeye” for his abnormally large biceps. Kirill Tereshin used “Vaseline” injections, or synthol oil, to enlarge his arms, which resulted in dead muscle tissue that required multiple surgeries to remove. Tereshin was reportedly told he could die or have an amputation if he did not undergo corrective surgery.
Doctors said Tereshin was “lucky” that the injections did not affect other parts of his body.

4. Mom’s butt was deformed after a botched Brazilian butt lift. She “nearly died.”
She now suffers from ongoing pain and a distorted bottom which can only be fixed by further surgery. (Focus On News Agency)
It was on the recommendation of a friend that Angela Pedrosa went to see a surgeon to get her buttocks distorted. She was injected with 300 milliliters of a substance in her buttocks, which caused intense pain and immediate effects on her health. An infection then set in, causing the flesh and tissue to rot, developing into sepsis.
A different team of surgeons removed the infection and injected her with copious amounts of antibiotics, but the damage left her bottom scarred and uneven. She will now have reconstructive surgery, which will remove fat from her abdomen to reshape her bottom. She is also afraid the reconstruction will not work, and has already suffered complications from the first stage.

5. Mother says failed weight loss surgery overseas left her with dark skin and ‘ruined her life’
The 53-year-old woman said that just days after the operation, the flesh around the wound began to rot and turn black. (Caters News Agency)
In another example of what not to do with tourist destination surgeries, Beatrix Searls from Montana paid $4,000 for liposuction surgery in Colombia last October. But just days after the procedure, the 53-year-old says the flesh around the wound began to rot and turn black. Searls has since had seven surgeries to try to fix the “botched” operation overseas, leaving her with severe scarring on her abdomen from ripped stitches. She claims doctors told her the Colombian surgeon may not have followed medical hygiene protocols.
“I can’t continue looking like this. I feel like I can’t go out in public, wear a bikini, go to the beach,” she said. “My life has been ruined. I want those responsible to be brought to justice.”

6. Instagram model tries to stop illegal butt injections, warning others against the procedure: “Don’t do it!”
The 35-year-old is now planning to have the illegal implants removed and is warning other women about the dangers they pose. (Rodrigo Gomes)
Courtney Barnes, who goes by the Instagram handle @MsMiamiTV, is urging her followers and fans to avoid “black market breast implant parties,” after she received illegal breast implants at just such a party, leaving her buttocks “discolored” and “saggy.” Barnes says she had 59-inch boob implants when she was 22, but now that she’s 35, she regrets all the attention they attracted. She also said it could cost more than $20,000 to repair the damage.
“Just because it looks good doesn’t mean it’s healthy,” she told a group of young women considering the procedure on “Hooked on the Look.” “And I just want to say, don’t do it. Don’t do it!”

7. Woman claims implant scars smell “like rotten meat” after botched implant surgery abroad
She saw an ad on Instagram and traveled to Turkey for breast augmentation surgery and all-inclusive accommodation. (SWNS)
Holly McCulloch claims she paid $3,500 for breast implants and an all-inclusive stay at a Turkish resort, but that her breasts became distorted and she felt like a “total freak.” She also claims that at one point, the seven-centimeter hole in her surgical incision started to smell “like rotting flesh,” and then she noticed the implants were starting to push through her skin.
She found the clinic through an advert on Instagram and said she was initially skeptical but decided to go ahead with the procedure. The implants have since been removed and she is due to have a third operation, this time to have new implants placed, at a hospital near her home in Manchester.
