3. Tourism can encourage local people to relocate.
The pursuit of profit has led some destinations to drive out residents and local businesses to make way for luxury resorts and big chain stores that attract tourists, resulting in the decline of local economies, cultures and communities.
What you can do:
Be really intentional about the places you go and the activities you do. “Eat locally and consider hiring a local tour guide,” says Nadine. “Make sure the money you’re already spending goes towards supporting the people who live in the community you’re visiting.” Truly immerse yourself in the area and you’ll end up spending your time more meaningfully.
4. Tourism can leave a large carbon footprint.
Transporting and housing travelers around the world requires a lot of energy. In fact, global tourism is responsible for 8% of the planet’s total carbon dioxide emissions, ultimately contributing to climate change.
What you can do:
A lot of your carbon footprint comes from transportation, so take any opportunity you can to reduce its impact. “Instead of taking lots of short trips or constantly traveling to different places, try to spend more time in each destination,” says Nadine. “Not only will slowing down reduce your carbon footprint, but you’ll also have more time to take in your surroundings and really enjoy the experience.” And when you’re traveling, traveling in groups and using public transport will make you more sustainable.
5. Tourism can damage ocean health.
The destruction of coral bays due to thousands of tourists boating and snorkelling trips, coupled with the threat of trash and extravagant development along pristine coastlines, may be putting the ocean at risk.
What you can do:
Be mindful of what you bring into the environment you’re visiting: “When doing anything in the water, be sure to use a reef-safe sunscreen, as the chemicals in certain sunscreens can have detrimental effects on local marine life and coral reefs,” advises Nadine. The key is to do your research and be respectful of your surroundings.
