With the offseason well underway, it’s time to think of some fun San Francisco 49ers stories and staff meet-and-greets. We’ve come up with a pretty good one: the 49ers’ biggest win in the last five years.
And there have been plenty of “fun” wins, too, including the 2019 game against the New Orleans Saints (still one of the best games I’ve ever seen as a fan) and the road win that saw the 49ers beat the pesky Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 playoffs (though it was the 49ers’ fault that the Rams actually won the NFC Championship Game a few weeks later).
Really, one of the best? I’d pick the 2023 NFC Championship win over the Detroit Lions. I call it the best because the offense got off to a mediocre start and managed to win games despite Brock Purdy and the 49ers having been criticized all season for not being able to play from behind. The defense, much like Steve Wilks’ defense, made a lot of crazy plays and stupid calls, but they showed up when they really needed to, even when I was feeling anxious at the very end of the game.
The other games I mentioned were good for that season, but the NFC Championship was arguably the best game of the last five years because the 49ers played a style of football they weren’t used to and no one thought they could play, plus seeing him do it at that stage, so early in the Brock Purdy era, will probably have a great impact on the mentality of how he plays later in his career.
But I’ll look back in 2023 and use this win as a win for the future. What do you think is the “best” win in the last five years? Maybe your definition of “best” is different from mine. Maybe beating the Seattle Seahawks to win the division in 2022 was the best win, because it’s the Seahawks and it’s always fun to see a rookie QB dominate that team.
What do you think?
