Teachers who are members of the Artı Gerçek – Educational and Scientific Trade Union (Eğitim Sen) are acting against the Law on the Profession of Teachers, which was submitted to Parliament by the AKP-MHP and discussed in the general assembly.
The teachers were prevented by the police from walking from the Ministry of Education to the National Assembly. As the police prevented them from doing so, the teachers decided to hold a sit-in. However, in the meantime, the police allowed a march from the National Assembly to the Red Crescent that the teachers from the Education Board wanted to organize.
They were assaulted and detained
As the Education Ministry’s members, who were protesting with the same demands, were not allowed to participate, the teachers called off their sit-in protest and decided to march again from the Ministry of Education to the National Assembly. However, the police again blocked the teachers. This time, the teachers were stopped as they were walking towards Güven Park, and the police announced their arrest and removed the barricades. The police removed the barricades and attacked the teachers with pepper gas as they walked arm in arm. 15 teachers were beaten and detained. Some teachers became ill after being hit with pepper gas at close range, but many teachers were beaten.
“We will resist to the end”
The teachers who continued walking after the incident were now stranded at the exit to Güven Park. The teachers who spoke here then moved towards the parliament building. Açtim Sen chairman Kemal Irmak said in a statement: “If the police are stubborn, we will be even more stubborn. We will resist to the end. We will bring back our friends who have been detained.”
